On Wednesday, Feb. 3, Little Ferry Police responded to a report of a vehicle stuck in the snow around 9 a.m. near Mehrof Road.

Though it could not be seen through the piles of snow the car, a four-door Mazda SUV hatchback had driven up on a parking divider with part of the car on the grass, according to NBC News.

When police arrived on the scene they saw the driver repeatedly revving his engine and spinning his tires in an attempt to free the car. The officers yelled that his plan wasn’t working and told the man to get out of the SUV and that a tow truck was on the way.

Soon thereafter, flames were seen coming up from underneath the car. The officers tried to put the flames out with a fire extinguisher, but the whole vehicle became engulfed in fire took quickly.

One of the officers broke through the back passenger window but wasn’t able to reach the man who was later identified as a 62-year-old Little Ferry resident.

The incident is still under investigation.
